Well, I did it. I focused most of my spare time this week to writing the rest of Chapter 38. But I have an issue. In the latest update I made Martha cry as she feels guilt over Ukrit’s (and ultimately Kendra’s) death. I find it easy to make my female characters get angry and break down and cry. But is that being fair? I am trying to write strong women whilst not neglecting male characters, but I seem to have two main female characters that display a rollercoaster of emotion whilst supporting male characters are generally calm and collected. Are my women too stereotypical? Are my men just two dimensional background characters? At times I feel I am failing both genders. That is something I will need to look into in the final edit when the story is done, and from now on as updates continue. As for Chapter 38, I have played a bit on the ridiculousness of bureaucracy and ‘red tape’. I hope it works well. But don’t worry about Kira’s slum, the rebellion is on its way and the new leaders of Princips are happy for them to play their part protecting the poorer in society. Sorry, it has been a very very busy week. That means this week’s ‘Islands of Hope’ update is very short. It is yet more of the extraordinary Princips board meeting. Luckily for the group who were trying to stop Kendra, Derik is taking it into his own hands to end the attack on the slums. But there is a twist that puts this idea in jeopardy. If you have not worked out yet, I love giving characters a ray of hope then swiftly pulling it away. I had hoped to have the whole of Chapter 38 finished this week, but it will have to roll on to next week. Also I started writing a new children’s book which has taken up more spare time. I told myself I would not do that so I could get things finished, oh well, best laid plans and all that! I am away this weekend so this week’s ‘Islands of Hope’ update is a day early. It’s been a strange week where I have continued writing Chapter 38. I found it hard to start the extraordinary board meeting, it’s not the usual thing I write, a bit too political/thriller for my normal style. However, after getting the first few lines down the scene is flowing well, in fact it is longer than I first thought it would be and is really building the plot up and plugging what could have been plot holes. So, this week we find out that Derik believes the documents the group have collated and is determined to stop the destruction of Kira’s slum. So that’s that bit of the story tied up. OK, maybe not, there might be a twist coming next week (hope it’s not a too obvious one!). For now you can read Chapter 38 on wattpad here, or start from the beginning here.
It has been a strange week, I found out that I do indeed have a chest infection. The first few days I spend relaxing off work to try and shift it, this included some writing. Amazingly the boardroom scene flowed a bit and I got over five hundred words written. The only reason I did not finish Chapter 38 was that I had to go back to work. So this week we find out that plans to destroy the slums are still on, which Martha is not too happy about. But Derik is a bit of a push over, so can they convince him to save the slums? You’ll have to wait till next week to find out. For now you can read Chapter 38 on wattpad by going here, or start from the beginning here. Oh yeah, happy Star Wars day, May the fourth be with you. Finally, RIP Peter Mayhew, you will be missed.
