Islands of Hope Update – 23/11/2018

Between parent’s evenings, badminton matches and parties it has been a very busy week. I feel I have barely spent any time at home and as such have done very little writing. It is another very short update to Islands of Hope therefore, about one hundred and fifty words again. I did say my only plan was to update it every week so I have at least managed that. This update sees Martha heading to Ukrit to confront him as she thinks he is lying. You can read Chapter 31 on wattpad by clicking here, or start from the beginning here. I would like to guarantee a larger update next week but I am afraid I cannot.

New Poem: Cancelled

No, the new poem has not be cancelled, it’s called ‘Cancelled.’ This is a bit of an extra for you. I was on a training course the other day and rushing back to get my train home on time. When I got to the station (in time I might add!) the train had been cancelled, I wasn’t best pleased, especially as I had over an hours wait till the next train. But then, from bad things good things appear, or rather mediocre things, OK bad things, but from bad things other bad things appear did not sound as good. Anyway, this poem popped into my head. I wasn’t going to write it but the first verse kept playing over and over. I think it works quite well. I was desperately searching for something to rhyme with something train related in the last verse, I came to carriage and marriage and that gave the whole poem a slightly sadder feel so I went with it. The rest of the poem is from experience, but I have been married for many years and we did not wait over an hour for a train on our wedding day, so the last bit is artistic licence. Anyway, you can read ‘Cancelled’ in my poetry collection on wattpad, entitled ‘Bad Poetry You probably never want to read,’ by clicking here, or as you are already on the blog post you may as well just read it below…

Cancelled

Hurry hurry

Check the clock

Keep on running

Just can’t stop

Time is ticking

Double fast

Keep up the pace

It has to last

There’s the building

Right in sight

I will get there

Using all my might

Quickly looking

Find the screen

Which platform?

Have you seen?

Do we go

North or South?

To Edinburgh

Or Bournemouth

I think I have it

Yes I do

That one there

Six thirty two

The noise has stopped

Why the hush?

Our train’s been cancelled

Why did we rush?

So here we sit

With overpriced food

And a cup of tea

That’s over brewed

It’s not the way

To start a marriage

Waiting an hour

For a packed carriage

Islands of Hope Update – 17/11/2018

Wow! That was a really busy week, extra stuff at work and on a training course. It all means I have barely been online to interact with any of you good souls. It also means that I have done very little writing (although there is a bonus poem coming that I wrote as I was stuck waiting for a train). So the ‘Islands of Hope’ update this week is a mere one hundred and fifty odd words. Sorry about that. I could have written a little more but have offered to write an article for another site so focused on that in my free time. For the moment you can read the start of Chapter 31, about Martha checking out the story Ukrit told her, by going here, or start from the beginning here.

The Locations of ‘A Close Shave with Destiny’

My comedy fantasy novella has been out for a few weeks, and the competition to win a copy is over. So I thought I would give you some more information about the book incase you missed the first couple of weeks of marketing. This blog post will tell you a bit about some of the key locations in the book.  The book is set in a moustache so I cannot really show exact images of what locations look like. However, I have been on pixabay and gathered some images that give a good idea of what the locations would look like. Before I start, I want to give a massive thank you to Ari Meghlen who gave me the idea to do this post, you can check out her website here, it has lots of great writing tips on it.

Right, so here are the five main locations in ‘A Close Shave with Destiny’…

Folical VillageFolical Village – (name based on a hair follicle) A small village of wooden shacks where the main protagonists come from; Wignut and Barnabas. The villagers believe in the one true God and are very religious. Well, all except Wignut, who thinks religion is a load of rubbish. He and Barnabas are sent out from the village to find some sticky stuff to glue the houses down after the village elder, Melstone, prophesies the coming apocalypse.

SpoticuleRed Spoticule Volcano – (name based on a spot) A large volcano with steep sides that is a blot on the landscape. Barren and lifeless yet tall and overbearing, our adventurers know that it is quicker to go over it than round it. But is it worth the risk? Especially as it could erupt at any point.

White FangsThe White Fangs – (name based on white hair being in moustaches i.e. it is patch of white hair) A mythical place that has become part of legend. It is eerie and scary so no-one enters there. It is a patch of pure white trees. Legend says the Wanderers patrol it, lifeless humans who have had their souls sucked out. They now wander The White Fangs looking for other people to take the souls from.

Philtral ValleyPhitral Valley – (name based on Philtrum, the divot in the face that leads from the lips to the nose) A beautiful valley that leads from The White Fangs to the Caves of Nosterak, known for bandits. It is lush with rich foliage and a babbling brook running through it. Has steep sides, but once within the valley it is a paradise.

Caves of NosterakCaves of Nosterak – (name based on nostrils) Two large caves next to each other. No-one has travelled inside as it is said that the Boogelas live there. Horrible creatures from your worst nightmare that lure you in then eat you alive. There are many other stories about what the Boogelas look like and what they do to people, but no-one has actually seen them so they may just be a myth. Best not to enter the caves, but Wignut and Barnabas need the sticky liquid inside.

So there we have it, some of the locations in ‘A Close Shave with Destiny’ along with images I have gathered off of pixabay. Not all the locations are what they seem though, some have surprises within them. If you want to know what there are you can find out by reading ‘A Close Shave with Destiny.’ You can get it from Amazon using the links below…

Islands of Hope update – 10/11/2018

Back at work this week, that means hardly any time for writing. So it’s only a small update of around one thousand two hundred words this week….wait….what? How have I written more this week then in total during the two weeks when I was off? Yeah I have been promoting ‘A Close Shave with Destiny’ but that is crazy. Actually there are two reasons; firstly I have not been sleeping well so have gone to bed late every night, and secondly I knew exactly what I wanted to write to finish Chapter 30 so hammered through it. So yeah, this week’s update completes Chapter 30, even better is that I feel back in the story after a few weeks of wanting to do other things. Also, we meet a new main character that was never intended to be a main character, well actually we have met her before but she shouted at me till I let her be a main character (metaphorically speaking!). So yeah, you can read Kira’s escape from the village on wattpad here, or start from the beginning here.

Islands of Hope Update – 03/11/2018

With half term days out, Halloween, fireworks and a horrid cold, it has been a hectic week. That means only a short update to Islands of Hope this week. I know exactly what I want to write but have not found the time to put it down. For now you will have to live with a bit more of Chapter 30 where the archer who brought Kira into the village attempts to free her. Sorry, but that is all for now. Oh yeah, you have until midnight tonight to enter the A Close Shave with Destiny competition, just click here. If you want to read Islands of Hope you can get to Chapter 30 on wattpad here, or start from the beginning here.
